Her doctoral thesis with the title "Die Galerie Schmela. Analyse des Galeriearchivs mit Fokus auf den amerikanisch-deutschen Kunsttransfer der 1960er Jahre" focuses on the American-German art market of the 1960ies and the accomplishments of the private gallery of her grandfather Alfred Schmela, who was a pioneer in showing and establishing contemporary American art such as Pop Art and Minimal Art in Europe. Lena Brüning completed her doctorat with "Magna Cum Laude".  The thesis was published by de Gruyter in April 2022.

In 2016, Lena Brüning spent one month at the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles, researching the Galerie Schmela archive (Schmela records).

From 2005 to 2013, Lena Brüning managed her own gallery, Galerie Lena Brüning, in Berlin. She organized numerous single exhibitions and group shows by young and emerging artists, and participated in several international Art Fairs.

In 2004 she finished her Master´s Thesis in Bonn entitled "Et mois aussi, je suis peintre!
